Northbrook College races ahead with second championship win

Northbrook College’s Motorsport team has been crowned champions of the Student Motorsport Challenge for a second year.

The team retained their title, holding a solid lead throughout the season to add more silverware to their trophy cabinet.

Students from Northbrook College’s degree-level motorsport course have been participating in the BRSCC Nankang CityCar Cup Championship throughout the year, competing against other colleges and universities as well as non-student teams.

They’ve attended seven race weekends around the country, including at Brands Hatch, Donnington  and Silverstone, and dominated the race season.

Dr Emma Norton, Team Northbrook Racing’s Team Principal and Motorsport Course Leader, said: “We are all delighted – it’s just as satisfying as our first championship win, in some ways it feels even better.

“This is only our second year of competing, so to win back-to-back championships is amazing! It’s very well-deserved by our students.

“They have worked hard throughout the year, showing great commitment and dedication and doing everything that a crew would do in any motorsport series – they have the same roles and responsibilities, so this really does give them a fantastic opportunity to learn and compete in a professional motorsport environment.

“They also have the opportunity to network with industry experts, giving them improved career opportunities and experience that will help them to get ahead once they’ve completed their course.”

Driver Richard Jepp, who raced on behalf of the team in the college’s Peugeot 107, also celebrated success – finishing third in the driver’s championship at the competition.

He said: “It has been an amazing team effort and I am so proud to be part of what we have achieved together. This year, although we have been very strong, has been a lot closer with the competition. I expect them to be even closer next year so we will have to keep pushing and get that third title in 2024!”

Helena Thomas, Principal at Northbrook College, added: “This is an absolutely outstanding achievement by our phenomenal motorsport team.

“We’re incredibly proud of the team, and the achievement of our students – competing in the Student Motorsport Challenge has provided them with so many opportunities and they really embraced and rose to the occasion.

“I’d also like to congratulate the staff, who have worked tirelessly and have given up weekends to support their students and to ensure they can access these opportunities. None of this would be possible without them.”
